The first 30 were built by KMW and the rest licence-built in Spain by General Dynamics, Santa Barbara Sistemas (GDSBS). Spain has ordered 219 Leopard 2E (a version of the 2A6 with greater armour protection), 16 recovery tanks (CREC) and four training vehicles. The Leopard 2A6 HEL entered service with the Hellenic Army in May 2008. The first locally built tank was delivered in October 2006. The first 30 are being assembled by KMW, with the remainder by ELBO of Greece. In March 2003, the Hellenic Army of Greece ordered 170 Leopard 2 HEL (a version of the 2A6EX). The Royal Netherlands Army upgraded 180 of its 2A5 tanks to the 2A6 configuration, the first of which entered service in February 2003. The German Army is upgrading 225 2A5 tanks to 2A6 configuration, the first of which was delivered in March 2001. The very important task of servicing these aircraft would be much more difficult without hydraulic power. The Leopard 2A6 includes a longer L55 gun, an auxiliary engine, improved mine protection and an air-conditioning system. Aircraft Material Handlers, powered by hydraulics, raise and lower to allow mechanics to reach all parts of the plane and keep it in top condition. Servicing and maintaining aircraft is another key part of our military’s function. The tracks used to move these huge vehicles along are powered by hydraulics. However, moving large armored vehicles is not easy. Armored personnel carriers are designed to do just that. Getting troops from place to place safely is obviously a high priority for our military. Let’s take a look at some of the ways hydraulic power is at use in government and defense work: Protecting and caring for our country are very serious matters, and hydraulic power makes these jobs easier and more efficient. We’re proud of the work hydraulics do in all industries, but it’s a special honor to see hydraulics at work in the areas of defense and government projects.
